Meet the green haired chicken lady
You may know me as the hot mess lady or green haired chicken lady, but my name is Savannah! Around five years ago we moved onto land alongside my parents and I got chickens again after not having them for years. I wanted to get them just for eggs for our family, but we know how that goes. I dove right into chicken math, processing to avian algebra.
I grew my social media over the years and I have the best community of crazy chickens ladies and gents! I am so thankful to have so many supportive people and have the opportunity to learn from amazing breeders out there.
My passion is colorful eggs and pretty birds. I for sure fall into the “color basket” hobby breeder category versus show quality exhibition breeder category.
My goal is to breed gentle birds that have beautiful feathers and lay stunning shades of greens, blues, chocolates and speckles. On The Hot Mess Homestead we don’t keep aggressive birds, if we don’t trust them to be around our kids we don’t keep them. We believe in breeding for health and vigor for strong and robust chickens!
Real-Life Homesteading
The Hot Mess Homestead was never about creating a picture-perfect version of farm life.
It is about learning as we go, laughing when things get ridiculous, raising animals we love and sharing the real side of homesteading.
There will be beautiful egg baskets.
There will also be mud, feathers, chicken drama, unexpected projects and at least one decision that seemed like a good idea at the time.
That is the hot mess part.
And I would not have it any other way.
Welcome to The Hot Mess Homestead
Whether you are here for the chickens, the colorful eggs, the breeding projects or just to see what kind of chaos we get into next, I am glad you found us.
You are welcome here.
From a Few Chickens to a Whole Community
As the homestead grew, I started sharing more of our everyday life online. The chickens, the animals, the wins, the messes and all the moments in between.
Over the years, that little corner of the internet has grown into an incredible community of fellow chicken ladies, chicken gentlemen, homesteaders, breeders and people who simply enjoy following along with the chaos.
I am incredibly thankful for the people who show up, laugh with me, encourage me and share what they know. I have also had the opportunity to learn from some truly amazing breeders, and that knowledge continues to shape the way I raise and breed my birds today.
This community has become one of my favorite parts of The Hot Mess Homestead.
Pretty Birds and Really Pretty Eggs
My passion is colorful eggs and beautiful birds.
I am very much a color-basket hobby breeder, rather than a show-quality exhibition breeder. I love opening an egg basket and seeing blues, greens, olives, chocolates, speckles and all the shades in between.
But pretty is only part of the goal.
At The Hot Mess Homestead, I breed with health, vigor and temperament in mind. I want strong, robust birds with beautiful feathers, incredible egg color and personalities that make them enjoyable to have around.
We do not keep aggressive birds in our breeding program. If I would not trust a bird around my own kids, I am not interested in passing that temperament along.
For me, a great chicken should be beautiful, healthy and pleasant to live with.
